A creative retreat at Haven on the Hill, Lalandusse, SW France. Our workshops are perfect for beginners who will discover and explore dye techniques and silk painting. No prior skills or knowledge necessary.
Shibori is a traditional Japanese practice of tie-dying, using resist techniques and indigo dye to create stunning intricate patterns on fabric. We will be covering: Arashi (pole wrapping), Itajime (folding and clamping with wood blocks), stitch resist and binding. You’ll have an opportunity to experiment and practice a variety of techniques on fabric before working on your main project – a silk scarf.
Silk painting is the art of applying special dye to silks. It is a gentle and relaxing art form and beginners can produce stunning results with vibrant colours. Before working on your main project – a silk painting, you will learn how to stretch silk on a frame, how to use an outliner to stop the colours flowing together and how to use shading and blending techniques to create simple, but stunning results.
Everything you need will be provided including sketching materials, resist, paints, brushes and pre hemmed silk product to work on. There is no need to worry if you feel your drawing skills are weak as we have images that can be traced through silk. There will be 5x 2-3hr workshops spread over 5 days. There will be free time for excursions such as trips to traditional markets, Monbazillac Chateau and Vineyard and an afternoon in Bergerac.
Participants will also have the opportunity to utilise the onsite art studio in their own time.
