Indigo Dye, Shibori and Lino Printmaking Retreat with Artist Donna Vokes Sunday 5th – 12th May 2019

A creative retreat at Haven on the Hill, Lalandusse, SW France. Our workshops are perfect for beginners who will discover and explore dye techniques and lino printmaking. No prior skills or knowledge necessary.

Shibori is a traditional Japanese practice of tie-dying, using resist techniques and indigo dye to create stunning intricate patterns on fabric. We will be covering: Arashi (pole wrapping), Itajime (folding and clamping with wood blocks), stitch resist and binding. You’ll have an opportunity to experiment and practice a variety of techniques on fabric before working on your main project –  a silk scarf.

Linocut is the easiest and most direct of all the printmaking techniques. A design is cut into the lino surface with specialist carving tools and then inked with a roller and impressed into paper or fabric. What is left of the lino surface is printed. You’ll have the opportunity to experiment with a variety of carving techniques and print methods and produce a least one finished A4 size print to take home.

Everything you need will be provided including a sketchbook for your ideas and notes. There is no need to worry if you feel your drawing skills are weak as we have images that can be traced. There will be 5x 2-3hr workshops spread over 5 days. There will be free time for excursions such as trips to traditional markets, Monbazillac Chateau and Vineyard and an afternoon in Bergerac.

Participants will also have the opportunity to utilise the onsite art studio in their own time.
